A longtime resident of Toronto, Ontario and moved to the beautiful Waterloo Region more than three years ago, Lawrence has gone from graphic arts to sketching and scratchboard, and ultimately to photography – with one thing in common between the three art forms – each finished piece speaks louder than words.

With a background in graphic design, Lawrence took a more personal approach to his art by creating portraits with black and white sketch boards. Fascinated by the simple, yet strong emotion of the art, his focus was on the expressions and inner passions of his subjects. However, just before a trip to Dubai in 2009, he found himself purchasing his first entry-level DSLR two days before his flight and he returned home with a new vision.

Not wanting to tread the same waters as travel photographers, he challenged himself to use this new medium to catch the same expressions of his subjects while integrating design concepts with his unique perspective on human nature. Self-taught and committed to the hours upon hours of practice needed to learn the intricacies of photography, his mornings now begin with a simple question: What moment can I capture in a photograph today that is different than the one I took yesterday?

Using an even more personal approach, Lawrence interacts with his subjects to create a connection that speaks volumes through his work. Expanding on his art, he now pursues the world of street photography, portraiture, event photography and continues to capture the life behind the stillness of his photographs.
But no matter where his lens takes him, Lawrence manages to find life through photography in even the most mundane, in the excitement of a single moment, and in the flavours of the world around him.
